What is spam?
Spam is a popular term for junk mail, i.e., e-mail containing information that you do not really want to receive. Examples include unsolicited messages, advertisements, chain letters, and hoaxes.
How did spammers get my e-mail address?
There are a variety of ways in which spammers (people who send spam) get e-mail addresses. Spammers compile mailing lists by scanning discussion groups and web sites, buying a mailing list, or randomly guessing your e-mail address. Sometimes the recipients of spam also disclose their e-mail addresses by filling out online forms or providing their e-mail address online in other ways.
How does GuyanaNet filter spam?
We use a combination of filters. The major amount of filtering is done by a programme called Spam Assassin. More information on Spam Assassin may be obtained by visiting their website, <www.spamassassin.com>. Some amount of filtering is also done through settings in the MTA (Mail Transfer Agent) that we use.
Where does the spam go once it is delivered?
To see e-mail that has been tagged or identified as spam, you need to access your GuyanaNet e-mail through the web interface. To do this, visit our home page, www.guyana.net.gy , and log into your mail account from there. Alternatively, you may go to http://mail.guyana.net.gy where you may also log into your e-mail account. Once logged in, you will notice a Spam Folder that should appear along with your other mail folders. E-mail tagged as spam will be in this folder. |

What happens if a message that I want gets tagged as spam?
That message should be in the Spam folder mentioned above. Just open the Spam Folder, and click on the message to view it. If you want to stop messages form a particular source from continuously being identified as spam, you will need to contact technical support (227-6045).
Why am I still getting spam?
Unfortunately, there's no way to eliminate spam entirely. Spammers are constantly trying to devise new ways in which to send spam without it being filtered. Sometimes, some of these methods work and usually this is temporary until new filtering methods are available to block “new” spam. However, the filters that GuyanaNet uses can significantly reduce the spam you receive.
GuyanaNet's Spam Policy
GuyanaNet strictly prohibits the use of their accounts to send
Spam; which corresponds with the International Spam Regulations.
Customers that constantly send Spam would be eligible to have
their service terminated.
